Whenever you feel the need to explore your surroundings, the Silas Griffith Inn is convenient to some of Vermont’s best destinations!
Leave your car at the Inn and stroll down the hill to the quaint shops of Danby Village. Stop first at Vermont Country Bird Houses. Jim Kardas builds these treasures in his back room shop. Next, visit the studio/showroom of furniture maker, Bob Gasperetti. No two pieces are alike. You’ll be just in time for lunch with Chef Norbert at Restaurant on the Green, an authentic Austrian country restaurant.
After lunch, for a nice long walk, head north on Main Street, cross over the brook, past Nichols General Store, and on to the Currier
Memorial School. Along the way you'll see village homes built in the 18th century as well as lovely rural landscapes! Turn around and
head back to the Inn.
Oh, by the way, antique and craft shops are everywhere in Vermont, with some of the finest right here in Danby! Call ahead to visit the Hooked on Vermont Designs studio, where you will see many original and beautiful hand-hooked wool rugs.
Crank up the car for a 15-minute ride to Manchester’s upscale factory outlets and shops for bargain hunting. While in Manchester, don’t miss the many local shops,
especially Flying Cow Signs, to pick up a unique gift for someone special, like you!
Want deeper exposure to Vermont culture? Drop by the Southern Vermont Art Center to view works by Vermont’s best known artists, or
take a tour of Hildene, the magnificent Georgian Revival estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln. We have museums for almost everything, from Norman Rockwell to fly-fishing, to marble to maple syrup!
Then, take a ride through the scenic countryside. Travel back in time as you stop in neighboring villages, such as Danby Four Corners,
Tinmouth, and Pawlet.
In the warmer months, hiking is a big attraction. The Inn is situated between two spectacular mountain ranges, with easy access to the
Appalachian/Long Trail in the Green Mountain National Forest. Whether novice or seasoned hiker, we can assist you with trail
information. Check out some of our favorite local hikes. Sports-minded enthusiasts can enjoy biking, horseback riding, golf, tennis,
fishing, and hunting in nearby locations.
In the evening, head out to the theater. Close by are the Dorset and Weston Playhouses, which both have professional theater groups. Back at the Inn, go for a dip in the pool, soak in the gazebo-spa, or take a
romantic walk through our quiet country meadow.
When the snows arrive, if you are a skier or rider, the inn is within easy driving distance of Stratton, Bromley, Okemo,
Pico, and
Killington. The Alpine skiing is some of the best in New England, and snowmobile lessons are available for beginners. There are also
many excellent cross-country and snowshoe trails close by. We would be happy to arrange an old-fashioned sleigh ride for you at the
Chipman Stables in Danby Four Corners. |
