Silas Griffith Inn

Inn Technology

HISTORY

Technology has always been a part of the history of the Silas Griffith Inn.
When Silas built the estate in 1891, the home and buildings were considered state of the art.

  • COMMUNICATIONS
  • Silas was the Vermont Telephone Company’s first customer. He had phone lines that interconnected his home, general store, and two charcoal plants. Being VTel’s first customer meant that he had the very first telephone in the State. In fact, you’ll see it on display when you arrive at the Inn!

  • SECURITY
  • Silas also had the first home security system in Vermont. This system notified Silas of any trouble at different locations in the house as well as at his plants. The decorative oak instrument panel is presently mounted on the wall of the Reception Room.

    The Great Oval Door

  • DESIGN
  • Considered by experts to be an architectural marvel is one of the largest pocket doors in New England. Made from what must have been an enormous cherry tree, we call it "The Great Oval Door." The Great Oval Door is located under the grand staircase, separating the Parlor and Music Rooms. When opened, it reveals a magnificent archway and allows the sound of music to fill the house!

There are more interesting stories about Silas' accomplishments,
but you'll have to visit the Inn to hear about them!

TODAY

The Innkeepers have maintained Silas' tradition of using technology
as a means of enhancing the ambiance of the Inn.

  • COMMUNICATIONS
  • Our goal is to offer reliable and efficient communications to our guests.

Every guest room has a direct dial telephone. With a central PBX system, our guests have 24-hour ability to make and receive phone calls as well as to check voice mail!

    Tea Room 24-hour Internet Cafe

Every guest room has a DSL jack and WiFi. These lines provide "always-on," 24-hour access to the Internet at speeds of 1000 kbps download, 128 kbps upload. These high speeds greatly reduce times typically spent downloading / uploading e-mail and attachments while traveling. If needed, the Inn provides USB adapters and a 25-foot cable so that you can work from any location in your room!

  • BUSINESS CENTER

Our business center offers photocopying, scanning, printing and fax services at very reasonable rates. Inquire at the front desk for hours and prices. Need your digital film "developed"? We can do that too!

  • SECURITY

Silas’ security system has been replaced with a modern, electronic fire alarm system that is approved and inspected by the Fire Marshall of the State of Vermont. The security and safety of our guests is of paramount concern, just as it was when Silas lived here.

  • DESIGN

Every guest room is heated with a direct vent, gas-burning fireplace. In direct venting, combustion occurs within a sealed chamber. The air needed for combustion is drawn through a vent to the outdoors and burned gases are vented separately to the outdoors. Thus, there is neither oxygen loss nor potentially dangerous gases present in the guest’s room. This technology assures that a guest can sleep comfortably and safely all night long with the fireplace in operation.

In the common areas, the magnificent but messy coal-burning fireplaces have been retrofitted with clean, gas-burning appliances. It took us more than six months of working with the gas company to come up with a retrofit design that preserved the beauty of the fireplaces while satisfying State Building and Safety Codes. When you see it, we think you'll like the effect as much as we do!

Your innkeepers are doing these things so that you will enjoy your stay and want to return.
We are always looking for ways to enhance our guests' comfort and peace of mind!
